Travel cashback in Australia — what to expect
Travel is consistently one of Kick Cashback's highest-paying categories. Hotels.com, Expedia, Booking.com and Agoda regularly offer 4-8% cashback on accommodation, with promotional uplifts pushing that to 10%+ during peak periods. Tour operators, attraction tickets, car hire and travel insurance also pay cashback through partner programs. Direct airline bookings rarely offer cashback because airlines pay very low referral commissions — booking flights through an OTA (Online Travel Agency) like Expedia or Lastminute typically returns more.
How to maximise travel cashback
For accommodation, compare cashback rates between Hotels.com, Expedia, Booking.com and Agoda before booking — the same hotel often appears across all four platforms at similar prices but with materially different cashback rates. Booking refundable rates costs a few dollars more but lets you re-book if cashback rates rise before your stay (or if a price drop appears). Avoid using OTA-generated promo codes from third-party coupon sites — they often invalidate the cashback tracking and you'll earn no cashback. Travel insurance, airport parking, car hire and attraction tickets are easy add-ons that compound the cashback on a single trip.
Cashback timing on travel orders
Travel cashback stays in Pending until after the stay or flight is completed — typically 30-120 days from booking depending on the trip date. This matches the merchant's cancellation window. Hotels.com and Expedia confirm cashback 30-60 days after the check-out date. Tour operators sometimes wait until 7 days after the tour completes. Once cashback moves to Available, claim any amount to your Australian bank account in 1-3 business days.
What's typically excluded
Travel cashback is paid on the room rate, tour cost or insurance premium — not on taxes, resort fees, government charges, optional extras booked at check-in, or in-room consumption. Gift cards, points-based redemptions and group bookings (typically 9+ rooms) are usually excluded. Cashback is reversed on cancelled bookings.
